If you are already a reader there will be no problem with your reading voice of course but we still need to ask the standards group to assess the quality of the product of your home facilities. You should therefore prepare a brief (2 minute) sample of what you can produce. The content is unimportant and the file can be either MP3 or wav (preferably MP3 to produce a smaller file for email attachment).
The software that most of us use is a basic (but good enough) free
program called Audacity. If you need to download a copy you can do so by

preferred settings for the recordings are Mono 16 bit 44100Hz. If that
is all gobbledegook don’t worry its fairly easy to ensure that these
settings become the default. If you
are currently using other software then by all means stick to that if
you can use the same settings. You might want to save your
Audacity recordings as mp3 files but will find that you are asked to
locate lame_enc.dll. |

| If you have not yet set up your PC for home recording and want some help please let us know and we can either advise or lend a hand. It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on an expensive microphone and USB devices for under £10 from Maplin tend to be fine for the spoken word. The other piece of software that it is useful to have is some CD burning software either for direct production and dispatch to a client or for recording the WAV files onto a Data CD which will become the "master copy" for the Tuesday team to use to duplicate onto tapes/CDs as appropriate. We tend to use Nero Start Smart which is often provided free with CD/DVD drives, but of course you can always use Windows own CD burning or other similar software if you prefer. | ||
| Uploading files using 123-Drive | ||
| If you wish to save driving to the STN office to deliver your recording you can instead upload it to a shared drive set up for the purpose. We have chosen to make use of a free shared drive associated with our web site hosts (123-Reg.co.uk). Our web master manages the SheffieldTalkingNews Community and can add you to the community members if you contact him (webmaster@sheffieldtalkingnews.org.uk). | ||
(1) Setting up your own shared space:
In your web browser go to (or click on) http://drive.123-reg.co.uk/pages/en/free-online-file-storage-signup Complete the registration fields and remember to check the free option (unless you really want to store more than 25 Gbyte of media files - this free allowance would store 20 years of Sheffield Talking News weekly tapes) (2) Add SheffieldTalkingNews to the list of Friends with whom you wish to share files. (3) Upload files using the upload button and send an email to SheffieldTalkingNews. (4) Check that the files now appear under your name (in uploaded files) in the Community folders - if they are there then all other community members will also be able view/download them and they can therefore be duplicated if necessary onto tape, C.D. or uploaded to this web site.
